Kandy takes Round #1

Radhika pilots Kandy SC to a 17-12 win over CR and FC

Dynamic full back Radhika Hettiarachchi produced another match winning performance to spearhead the defending champions Kandy Sports Club to a hard fought 17 points to 12 victory over arch rivals CR and FC in their SLRFU Caltex inter club ‘A’ division league rugby tournament match worked off at Longden Place yesterday.

Kandy SC thus went on to finish on top of the points table at the completion of the first round matches with an unblemished record.

CR and FC had to be satisfied with the runners up position and their ‘return’ clash at the Nittawela Stadium will probably decide the league champions for 2009.

Will Kandy take the lead?

Who will remain unbeaten is anybody's guess at the end of this Sunday's key clash between Kandy Sports Club and CD & FC in the final first round clash of the Caltex Rugby League tournament match which will be played at Longden Place in Colombo.

Kandy Sports Club have an impeccable record in the Caltex League rugby tournament having not lost a match since 2004. Their last defeat was in the hands of CR & FC in the year 2004 at Longden Place and since then they have virtually steamrolled over their opponents in this tournament. Thus they will go all out to preserve this record.

The table of points shows that both teams have an equal number of points and Kandy SC head the table by virtue of having gained more bonus points. Thus a win in this match will help them to march over their arch rivals or a step closer to the title as they will be hard to beat in the return game which will be played at Nittawela. Kandy SC led by Pradeep Liyanage will be at full strength with the return of centre three quarter Gayan Weeraratne and flanker Sean Wijesinghe. Only centre three quarter Mohammed Sheriff will not be available due to injuries but his absence will not be felt much as Weeraratne returns to the side after the serious injury which he sustained three weeks ago.

When the final whistle is blown on Sunday evening, it will be known who is the King after an exciting battle.

Namal shines for Navy

Here is the former St. Thomas’ No.8 and Sri Lanka U20 captain Namal Rajapaksa in action at the match between Navy and CR&FC played last Saturday at Longdon Place. Incidentally Namal is the Chairman of "Tharunyata Hetak" organization, which is the sole sponsor of the popular President’s Schools U20 Rugby League 2009 tournament.

CR and FC opened the floodgates in the second half to defeat the Navy by 32 points (3 goals, 1 try, 1 penalty and a drop goal) to 10 (1 goal and a penalty) in the Caltex league rugby game at Longden Place yesterday. At the breather CR led 13-3.

Until then the Navy gave the red shirts a torrid time and it was only after the introduction of Navy’s Namal Rajapaksa and Samantha Lakshan that the sailors got going. One wonders why they were not included in the team from the beginning.

Sri Lanka rugby earns dubious distinction

Rugby Interim Committee Chairman Dr. Maiya Gunasekere says that Sri Lanka has the worst behaved crowds at rugby matches.

Gunsasekere told ‘The Island’ that referees being assaulted and abused at matches was synonymous with soccer elsewhere in the world, but sadly in Sri Lanka, such problems were associated with rugby.

"These problems must be nipped in the bud. We will not allow these problems to continue," Gunasekere said.

Rugby sevens propels Kenya onto world sporting stage

Kenya - hitherto a virtual non-entity in the world of rugby - has been propelled on to the international stage following their recent impressive showing in the sevens World series.

Less than three years after launching an aggressive campaign, the national sevens team, known as Shujaa (Kiswahili for heroes), have caught the imagination by registering impressive victories over rugby superpowers including South Africa, New Zealand, England and Argentina.

They have shown their consistency on the sevens World series tour this season and were just one game away from winning their first-ever cup final.

Their performance now ranks them on a par with athletics - Kenya’s dominant sport since independence in the 1960s.

“Awesome. Absolutely awesome,” remarked Jack ‘Saik’ Sikenyi, a former rugby player, who was among thousands of fans who had thronged a popular Nairobi pub to cheer the team during the London Sevens last week.

President's Trophies on offer again

It is nice to note the revival of the President's trophy rugby tournaments which was once considered the most prestigious title to win in inter-club as well as inter-school rugby.

Thanks to the untiring efforts of President Mahinda Rajapaksa, the tournament will be revived after a lapse of one year on a request made by the sports-loving President.

It is heartening to see none other than the First Citizen coming forward to resurrect the game. President Rajapaksa, former President of the Athletic Association of Sri Lanka and the Sri Lanka Elle Federation, has always been a great promoter of sport. But he has a special affection for rugby, gifting his all three sons - Namal, Yoshitha and Rohitha, for the game to represent Sri Lanka at youth level.

The Sri Lanka Rugby Football Union (SLRFU) Interim Committee has been able to revive the tournament due to a generous sponsorship package from Chevron Lubricants. The CEO / Managing Director of Chevron Lubricants, Kishu Gomes has been a true sports promoter right from the early stages of his distinguished career.
